Del.icio.us lets you have some privacy

Del.icio.us added today, to my surprise, a private saving feature
which allows you to save links and bookmarks them as private.

All you have to do is to go to your “settings” and click on
“private saving” to activate. then you’ll see the new option whenever you save a page.

I can't say I'm not disappointed. I always loved the fact that del.cio.us is a SOCIAL bookmarking service and I think it might lose a little of the site's charm.

If you don't want to share links with other people, don't.
I think if people have the option NOT to share,
they'll think twice before sharing.

I just worry that lots of good links are not going to be published.
I do hope I'm wrong but this is a step back to my opinion
especially when the wonderful thing about the web today is sharing.

no-- theres nothing wrong with pvt bookmarks , at the end of the day it is a book mark service.

So, If I wanted to keep some book marks pvt, then the service should permit it !!

I'm sorry, I don't get it.
why is it a social service when you keep a link to your self?
is it good just for you to have a place to bookmark all the links that you don't want anybody to see anyway?

Actually it started as a book mark service and not a social service

technically itto keeps your fav links and then you can share those link and thirdly to discover new links thru someone's fav links , thats how the product evolved... maybe the community have now asked for pvt bookmarks.. or the product is strategiclly getting tuned up :)-

Most important to note, is that they got aqquired by Yahoo and this now becomes catogorized as "social" software..watch the space w/upcoming.com too.. With Yahoo, Del.io.us , Flickr and upcoming, along with yahoo maps, makes that an interesting to watch social space.. !!

On the other hand I have to agree that a site that listen to the readers needs, will probably succeed on the behalf of that.
I guess it's only a matter of time for us to see what's the direction that del.cio.us is going to..

I have mixed feelings for the change. It makes no sense because I always thought that was what regular bookmarking was for. If you use more than one computer regularly, though, I can see where it would come in handy. But why make it private? The internet is an awesome place that often conceals identities, does it really matter if a handful of people know you like that site?

I'm a university lecturer, and so I use a number of differnet computers (home, office, teaching rooms) and I find that Del.io.us is very useful for moving between one computer and another.

But it's strength lies in the fact that it is not just a personal service - it's a space for you to share links (very useful for pointing students in the direction of various resources), to find links and to find other like minded people on the web.

I can see no good reason why this would need to be private, unless people are bookmarking things that are particularly sensitive or self-revealing (but then you'd just hide behind your user name, surely?)

Orly, I have to disagree with your dissappointment.

First, as the others said - the need for privacy was a well-felt missing meature. I had to hold myself from posting some sites just because I know YOU know my delicous username :)
The way I see it - it's ignorant to publish an application that calls for sharing without the option for privacy.

As for the sharing - one of the most interesting and phenomenas of web 2.0 is the unexplained desire to share. People WANT to contribute content, weather it's a blog or a tag. Actually, most blogging systems have a built-in "My recommended links" feature.

The second part of your comment is my point exactly!
Del.icio.us have so much powerful site, why try to change something that good? when i come to submit a link i do WANT people to know about that link, if i wouldn't want that i wouldn't place it there.

Any how I didn't say that because of web 2.0 we don't need to have privacy, i just said that Del.icio.us have a unique Social site and it's great as it is.

Maybe if I'll get to be antisocial one day...

"if i wouldn't want that i wouldn't place it there"

Delicious is not a bookmarks sharing application. it's a bookmark management application wisth sharing ans socializing features.
I ass bookmarks so i'll have them accessible from anywhere.

"why try to change something that good?"
If users will still share because they want to - than there's no change for real.
