There is a lot of buzz around desktop replacements and web operating systems. Zimbra has a very good solution for email / calendar but it's for companies with 25+ users.

The demo was not working at the time I checked the link.

Hey Guys, I just popped into say that I am one of the developers behind ORCA Desktop. And no, this is NO SCAM. Its my personal guarantee to you all.

Now, our server is pretty overloaded with all the activity so we are getting it ready to hold the new users. Don't worry, you will be able to test out your ORCA Desktop pretty soon (as soon as I am done activating 500 new users). And one more thing, please use Internet Explorer only. ORCA Desktop is currently in Beta 1 stage and works only on IE. We are going to support other browsers with our Beta 2 release pretty soon.

Regarding the mistakes in english and broken links, for that, I will have to apologize. Yes, we should focus on the site and we are currently working to put together a nice site for you, this site was made a long time ago by our developers whose first language is not english. So please bear with us guys, forget about the site for a moment and just login to your ORCA Desktop and provide us with your feedback.

Regards,
Nipun Jain
Developer, ORCA Desktop

im sorry to say but its crap, first of all its slow, secondly firefox isnt supported, and well what can you actually do on it?

its a nice idea, but has been done before and failed for one main reason; im using a computer to surf the web why on earth would i want to start using a computer to connect to the internet and start using an operating system? theres no point if i have an operating system on the computer im using to access ORCA!

Nipun Jain, you should change the build status to pre-alpha stage rather than Beta its crap!

Will Microsoft or Apple be suing you first? Since you have stolen there user interface with properly no permissions to do so!

The world goes on i suppose :) anyway, Orli Yakuel nice post :)

Dear Adam

First of all, let me introduce myself.

My name is Leon, i am the Lead Devleoper of ORCA.

To take one thing at a time...
Yes, the Beta #1 is slow, betas usualy are - this beta is a test of idea's comming from more than 3000 diffrent people, its a brainstorm - i promise you that the B2 will be so much more.

I understand that you use a webbrowser to surf the web, but when you look at a WebOS and the concept behind, you should - as any other product, try to see the reasons for using it, here are some :
a) You dont want to use Windows, so you boot your computer using OrcZilla (our livecd bootcd/usb that boots directly to the online orca)
b) You want to be able to keep your personal/company data online for easy access and storage - and you want to be able to work with it in a easy way that you are use to - not every who have a computer is a computer genie.
c) Enjoy the many games and applications on _one_ place, and put together not only a personal startpage, but a complete online desktop.

This was 3 simple reasons, now.. i .. like anyone else .. could find plenty of reasons not to use it.. but then again.. we dont go out and buy a plane to drive on the roads.. ORCA is like any other product, you should have it, and use it, because you want to - have thereby have a reason for it :-)

.. the only thing that makes ORCA alittle diffrent, is that it is based on the idea's of the users, not a big company with the intend to make money on it - afterall.. it is free..

And for you Orli..
From the bottom of my heart, i thank you - truly - you got yourself a new fan.

But its not free, your trying to get users to buy your products. Most beta 1's as you put it arent slow. Pre-Alpha versions are or private betas having a slow public beta is like hitting your self in the face hundreds of times.

But how could you use an online operating system that is slow, and isnt really an operating system. Infact how can you get away with calling it an operating system? its really not! An OS is a system software responsible for the direct control and management of hardware and system operations. All ORCA does is provide a form of user interface inside something that already has a hardware controller. AKA your just another online desktop, just not as good as the others!

Anyway, enough with the flaming! I hope you do well and hopefully you will support firefox soon, and allow users to create there own applications for your online desktop in the shape of an OS!
