Fascinating! Content Aware Image Resizing

This is a video presentation on content aware image resizing. It demonstrates a software application that resizes images in such a way that the content of the image is preserved intelligently.

This unique algorithm developed by Dr. Ariel Shamir and Dr. Shai Avidan (Adobe)

It should come standard or as a plugin for Photoshop.

Very cool... but... in some cases there'd be a danger of changing the visual meaning intended by whoever created or published the image. e.g. just shoving two people close together who were originally far apart could communicate vastly different information than intended.

Use with care!

FYI, this was part of the "Image Slicing & Stretching" paper session on Monday August 6 at SIGGRAPH 2007. The video is not a fake.

Hi,
If you are looking for a software to try out seam carving, take a look at http://www.thegedanken.com/retarget

The program that you can download there (for Windows and Linux, and free) is already highly optimized concerning speed, and apart from enlarging or decreasing image size you can also use masks to protect or delete certain parts of your image.

Have fun,
Irmgard

Check out rsizr.com for a Flash-based implementation of seam carving that lets you resize your own images, both in height and width simultaneously, in real time. (You can rescale and crop images too!)

Our website performs a lot of real-time image processing for our users. We would love to use this resizing technology as a server-side component on the web server. Can't wait to see this technology get released soon!
