Ezmo - Another one Bites the Dust

Genbeta, which is a very cool Spanish language tech blog that covers web 2.0 startups, reported yesterday that Ezmo is shutting down. Ezmo - A web-based music player, allowed groups of friends to share music. The idea was to let the users play music directly from the web-site as if it was from their desktop with the ability to listen to their or their friends' playlists from wherever they were.

Ezmo's goal was to cooperate with music labels in order to enjoy revenue that was based on music sales and promotion (which is a very smart business model). Unfortunately, the idea didn't to succeed due to the fact that the music labels didn't show any willingness to participate in such model.

Ezmo will be shut down on Friday March 14th, so you still have time to explore the application.

On a personal note, I have to say that for me this service was one of a kind app. I found a great young artist (Alexander Schultz) through it - I guess I would have never found about him if it hadn't been for Ezmo, so I really appreciate it for that.

Speaking of which, I'd like to offer some alternative apps, that are based on the same idea: A web player that behaves like a desktop one, with some social elements that makes a difference:

MediaMaster

MediaMaster lets you store all your music in one place and access it from any internet connected computer or stream player. It also allows you to easily share your music with all MediaMaster’s community members as well as your friends, meaning you can listen to other users’ radio stations, send invites to become MediaMaster friends, and vote for top stations. Their new interface and design looks absolutely great and as a user you will be able to personalize your MediaMater player skin with your own background image choice.

Anywhere.FM

Anywhere.FM lets you play and share your music collection wherever you go. It's a powerful music player that makes it easy to upload your entire music collection ( The desktop uploaders currently only support uploading your iTunes library), play it and have it on any computer, and discover new music through Anywhere.FM's community. You can search for friends by typing in their username in the search bar above the profile pictures, or simply invite your own friends to join and discover music together, while seeing how the music tastes compare.

Spool.fm

Spool.fm, allows you to search for all your favorites music and easily to make playlists from the results of that. You'll be able to hear those playlists over and over on the Web. Spool.fm includes drag & drop to create playlists, AJAX everywhere and a lot of sexy features such as similar artists recommendations and the great feature “listen with a friend” which allows you to listen in real time to what a friend is listening to!

JukeFly

On JukeFly you can access all your music online as well as discover new music by connecting with a huge community of users sharing similar musical interests. The JukeFly music server does not upload the songs to their server, it streams the music from your computer, so all you need to do is to download their music server to the computer that contains your music collection. Keep in mind that if you want to have your music on the go, this little client will need to stay open, to be able to play your music.
