Get the Pic? Sure! Guess Phrases using Web Resources
Tweet
Last week I attended the Yahoo! Search BOSS Hack Day in Tel Aviv.
To be honest, the concept of this meetup was interesting, but the content as it presented was pretty dull. One thing was exciting though: The developers contest. Yahoo! encouraged the audience in this meetup, (mostly developers of course), to build products & mashups with their search APIs (what they call: A truly open API with as few rules and limitations as possible).
Now to the fun part:
Eyal Shahar, my partner at Go2web20 is a very gifted person, and he works better under pressure. In just three days (!) he created a brilliant game for this Yahoo! BOSS contest using Yahoo! BOSS image search engine, BOSS spelling correction, BOSS news search, and some other sources.
The result:
Get the Pic? Sure! - Guess phrases using web resources.
More extraordinary games from Eyal:
Blind Shooter
PAH: The first voice-controlled game on the web (I will never get over this one)

Get the Pic? Sure! - Guess phrases using web resources.
- Select 3 letters
- A random phrase containing these letters is selected
- See some pictures describing the phrase, and try guessing what it is
- You can either guess the entire phrase or try guessing letters
- If you see you can't get it - buy a hint. A hint is a sentence containing the phrase.
- If you misspell the phrase - you will be forgiven and get your points

Thats such an awesome concept/game. I especially liked the part that forgives misspells. :P
I guess something similar can be cooked up for travel enthusiasts who travel to a lots of places.
I'm an ESL teacher, and think the game would be great for students. However, it would be even better if the correct answer was displayed if the player couldn't figure out the word.
Is there any chance something like that feature could be added?

Hi Larry.
Glad you liked it.
The correct answer IS displayed in the background when you're in the game-over screen.
Also, when you misspelled - the correct spelling appears.
Oops! Next time I'll follow the advice I give to my students and pay attention a little better...
Larry
A very cool game Eyal! May I ask how you used BOSS to generate a word based on the 3 letters? Or do you just do a dictionary lookup...?
